Apprenticeship in India’s Furniture Industry: 5-Step Implementation Guide

Here’s a primer for understanding the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and a step-by-step guide for implementing apprenticeship in India’s furniture industry.

What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is structured skill development that blends classroom/centre-based
learning with on-the-job training under a registered contract. For manufacturers, it
creates a repeatable pipeline of job-ready talent; for learners, it’s paid, supervised
experience that leads to nationally recognised certification and an industry-relevant
career path.

Eligibility, Criteria & Benefits
For Apprentices

  • Age: Minimum 14 years (18years for hazardous trades)
  • Education: As per trade requirement – 5th/8th/10th/12th pass, ITI, Diploma, or Graduate
  • Registration: Must register and sign an apprenticeship contract on www.apprenticeshipindia.gov.in
  • Benefits: Earn while you learn, gain practical experience, and receive a nationally recognized certification that improves employability and career growth.

For Employers

  • Any registered organization (private or public) with a workforce above 30 can engage apprentices.
  • Must engage 2.5%–15% of total workforce and pay stipends as per prescribed minimum wages.
  • Benefits: Access to trained manpower, 25% stipend Paid by Government (up to ₹1,500/month) under NAPS 2.0, and development of a future-ready skilled talent pipeline.

Implementation Process
#1. Registration & Opportunity Creation
Employers and apprentices register on the portal; employers declare trade, seats, and training duration

#2. Selection & Contract
Apprentice applies and, upon selection, both parties digitally sign the contract
#3. Training
a) Basic Training: For freshers (2–3 weeks) via company/training provider
b) On-the-Job Training: Practical workplace learning (6–24 months)
#4. Stipend Payment
Employer pays stipend; Government reimburses 25% (up to ₹1,500/month) under NAPS 2.0
#5. Assessment & Certification
Apprentices are evaluated by NCVET/Sector Skill Council (FFSC for furniture industry) and
receive a National Apprenticeship Certificate
