Plastics specialist Diplast has developed a range of composting bins that make composting of garbage a simple and efficient process. Here is the composting process made easy…
What is Composting?
At the simplest level, the process of composting requires making a heap of wetted organic matter known as green waste (leaves, food waste), and waiting for the material to break down into humus after a period of weeks or months. Depending on how carefully the pile of garbage is managed and the correct conditions, composting takes 1-2 months.
Why Compost?
- Composting eliminates wet waste from homes
- Organic fertiliser for plants is created at home
- It’s a very easy process with no odour or mess
- It is designed for families living in cities
- It saves money for garbage disposal & soil enhancement
Composting Process
Step 1– select a dry, shady spot near a water source
Step 2 – add brown and green material in alternate layers
Step3 – keep the compost moist, but not too wet
Step 4 – occasionally turn the compost mixture to provide aeration
Step 5 – as materials breakdown, the pile will get warm
Step 6– when material is dark with no remnants of food or waste, the compost is ready. Add it to lawns and gardens, or anywhere that could benefit from some good soil.
What not to Compost
Metal, glass and other products that do not easily breakdown, coal or charcoal ash, diseased or insect ridden plants, black walnut tree leaves and twigs, pet waste, bones, meat fats, oil, dairy products and eggs, yard trimming treated with chemical pesticides.
Vermi Composting
The same bin can be used for vermi composting. This type of composting requires building a worm bin, filling it with bedding, and simply putting food scrap into the bin for the worms to consume and break down. For hastening the composting process, add red warms which are available in nurseries. This process generates more compost. Vermi compost is an excellent nutrient–rich organic fertiliser and soil conditioner. ')}
