IPA Chennai Chapter Celebrates World Plumbing Day

As part of World Plumbing Day, the Chennai chapter of the Indian Plumbing Association (IPA) organised a painting competition for school students, in association with leading pipe maker Astral Pipes. Over 150 students participated in the environment painting competition. Additionally, the occasion was used as a platform to reinstate the importance of plumbing and the growing need of skilled workforce.

Abbas Lehry, chairman, IPA Chennai Chapter opined, ā€œAs real estate booms, several other sections gain importance, plumbing for example. With more complex buildings getting
designed and constructed, there is a growing need for trained plumbers.ā€ He further stated that the pool of skilled plumbers is very small in comparison to the demand. As per IPA estimates, by 2020 the requirement of trained plumbers will touch 12 lakh while the current availability is about 2.5 lakh.

Lehry called for greater participation from the industry to fulfil the demand gap by providing training to plumbers, as the current pool is either untrained or self-trained. ā€œAs an industry, plumbing plays a paramount role in providing potable water, safe sanitation and water conservation apart from ensuring safety of buildings and their occupants. It is crucial that plumbers are trained and provided with required skill-sets.ā€ ')}
