Will Make India a Global Plastics Hub, says Chem & Fert Minister Mansukh Mandaviya

Plastindia Foundation has a vision to make India a global plastics hub for products, materials and technologies. The Indian plastics industry is already on track to become a Rs 9.10 lakh crore sector. The recently announced PLASTINDIA 2023 exhibition, to be held during 1-5 February 2023, is an integral part of the Foundation’s larger game plan. The international exhibition and conference will showcase innovations in the field of technology, processes, materials and products, and present the strength of the Indian industry in various fields. The event will also throw up significant opportunities for investments and partnerships with international players.

That the 11th edition of PLASTINDIA was launched by Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, is an indication of expectations from the industry for taking the Indian economy to the $5 trillion mark. More so because plastics today are an integral part of most every economic activity, right from R&D to medicine, from agriculture to manufacturing. At the launch event in New Delhi last week, the minister unveiled the logo, brochure and goals of the exhibition. He also assured industry captains of support for building an enabling environment, to further boost the performance of the entire sector and help achieve its full potential. He sent out a clear message as he said, “The industry is contributing significantly to the economic development of the country. The government is committed to making India a global hub for the manufacturing of chemicals & petrochemicals. We are also committed to making this sector aatmanirbhar.”

The presence at the launch, of Bhagwanth Khuba, Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilizers and New and Renewable Energy, and Arti Ahuja, Secretary for Department of Chemicals and Petro-Chemicals only reinforced the commitment of the government towards Plastindia Foundation’s initiatives going forward.

Established in 1987, Plastindia Foundation is the apex body of major associations, organisations and institutions that are connected with plastics. Its members include entities which promote development of the plastics industry and assist in the growth of plastics and related materials. PLASTINDIA is the world’s third largest exhibition for this sector. In its last edition, held in 2018, over 1,800 exhibitors from 44 countries presented to 2,45,000 visitors from 103 countries.

Responding to the minister’s invocation, Plastindia Foundation president Jigish Doshi said, “The industry employs about four million people and comprises more than 50,000 processing units. It is expected to reach Rs 9.1 lakh crores ($102 billion) by 2025. We are committed to working closely with the government and the industry to facilitate growth, and to foster the development of innovative and modern manufacturing techniques that will be sustainable for the environment and the economy.”

A major aim of the apex industry body is to contribute significantly to exports, and to make India a global plastics hub by emerging as one of the highest producers of plastic. According to Doshi, the current business environment, bolstered by the aatmanirbhar movement and vocal for local initiative, gives an impetus to the plastics industry to grow and provide excellent export opportunities. Indian exports of plastics in the year 2019-20 were $10 billion and are expected to reach $25 billion by 2025.
