Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment, Rotary Club of Bombay Set Up Four Community Water Plants at JJ Hospital

The Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment (EEIE), in association with Rotary Club of Bombay, has set up four community water plants inside the JJ Hospital campus to provide safe and healthy drinking water. The initiative will reach out to over 1,000 hostel students.

The proposal for setting up water plants inside the hospital campus was initiated by the Dean of the hospital. He approached EEIE and Rotary Club of Bombay to install four water plants as part of the Water and Sanitation thrust area and the Jal Daan initiative. To this end a formal MoU was signed on 13 April 2017 for this initiative between JJ Hospital, Rotary Club of Bombay and Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment, with the aim to provide clean and safe drinking water to over 1,000 students.

EEIE conducted a detailed survey of each of the hostel buildings before recommending the installation of four 1,000 LPH UV plants; the source of water being BMC. As a part of the understanding the hospital will be taking care of daily maintenance and hygiene, while Rotary Club of Bombay under their thrust area of Water, along with EEIE under their Jal Daan initiative, will install these four plants and also provide comprehensive AMC for five years along with infrastructure. These plants will be installed at RM Bhatt Boys Hostel, Apna Boys Hostel, Apna Ladies Hostel, and Ladies Hostel.

ā€œEureka Forbes Institute of Environment has always been committed to ensuring that people have access to safe and healthy drinking water no matter where they are, and to being a true ā€˜friend for lifeā€™ to the community. We are extremely glad and thankful to Sir JJ Group of Hospitals for providing us with this opportunity of installing water ATMs inside the campus to ensure supply of safe, healthy and affordable drinking water to the students of the hostel,ā€ said A V Suresh, trustee, EEIE. He added that the institute has installed many such water purification systems under its Jal Daan initiative, in partnership with NGOs and social service organisations. ā€œIn the near future also, we aim to solve the water problems across the country by installing such water shops with the help of like-minded organisations who have been championing the cause of good health and healthy living.ā€

L P Lahani, Dean of JJ Hospital, shared that the water purifiers set up in hostels for students are not functioning well due to lack of maintenance. ā€œMost of these students do not have access to safe and clean drinking water. Taking this need into consideration, we decided to set up the water plants particularly designed to meet the basic requirements of a large number of students in-house,ā€ he said.

Dr Mukesh Batra, president of Rotary Club of Bombay, inaugurated the water ATMs. ā€œBeing a part of Indiaā€™s oldest and largest club, one of our key focus areas has been to provide clean drinking water to the communities. Through this initiative we are happy to contribute to the changing future of medicine. I am hopeful that this effort will reduce the risk of students falling ill, in turn treating more patients. As a part of our prior initiatives, we have already installed a number of water plants in areas like Malvan and seen immense success on this front,ā€Ā he said.
