Roca has expanded its Ohtake collection of over-countertop washbasins in India with designs by Brazilian architect and designer Rodrigo Ohtake. Made using Roca’s proprietary Fineceramic® material, the collection combines sculptural, nature-inspired forms with thin walls and tapered edges, and is offered across different basin sizes and finishes including White, Stone, Beige, Matt Black and Terracotta on selected models.
An Ohtake Design Language Inspired by Nature
The Roca Ohtake basins collection originated with Brazilian architect Ruy Ohtake, whose design drew on the organic shapes of the Brazilian landscape. Curved surfaces, rounded forms and undulating edges became defining elements of the basins.
One of the inspirations behind the original design was the egg. Ohtake was interested in how a thin shell could combine delicacy with structural rigidity, an idea that informed his use of Roca’s Fineceramic material to create basins with slender walls and edges.
The original Ohtake collection received a Red Dot Design Award in 2019.
The collection has now been extended by Ruy Ohtake’s son, Rodrigo Ohtake, who leads the multidisciplinary OHTAKE studio following his father’s death in 2021. His designs continue the collection’s organic vocabulary while introducing a different interpretation of its characteristic curves.
New Basin Forms Draw on the Calla Lily
For his contribution to the collection, Rodrigo Ohtake has developed two new over-countertop basin designs inspired by the calla lily flower.
Starting with the curves associated with the original collection, he opened and softened the basin forms, extending their silhouettes to suggest a cupped hand collecting water. According to Roca, Ohtake developed the proportions through a hands-on process involving miniature dough maquettes before translating the forms into ceramic.
The resulting designs feature asymmetrical, flowing profiles that give the basins their sculptural appearance.
Rodrigo Ohtake’s designs for the collection received the Best in Show award at Expo Revestir in São Paulo in 2023.
Fineceramic Enables Thin Walls and Tapered Edges
All Roca Ohtake basins are manufactured using the proprietary Fineceramic material. The material is central to the design because it enables the thin walls and precisely tapered edges that characterise the collection.
Roca also states that Fineceramic provides durability and scratch resistance while maintaining the refined surface required for the basin forms.
The relationship between material and form is therefore an important part of the Ohtake proposition: rather than treating the ceramic simply as a surface material, the collection uses its properties to achieve the slender profiles and curved geometries conceived by the
designers.
Sizes and Finishes in the Ohtake Basin Range
The expanded Roca Ohtake basins collection available in India includes three over-countertop Fineceramic basin formats:
- 625 × 385 mm (RS327A1P..0): White, Stone, Matt Black and Terracotta
- 550 × 385 mm (RS327A13..0): White, Beige and Matt Black
- Ø380 mm (RS327A15..0): White, Beige and Matt Black
Terracotta is the latest colour addition to selected models. The warm, earthy finish draws on the ochre soils and clay tones of the Brazilian landscape, extending the nature-led design narrative beyond the basin’s physical form into its colour palette.
Across the collection, White, Stone, Beige and Matt Black provide additional finish options depending on the basin model.
Design Collaboration Across Generations
The expanded Roca Ohtake basins collection brings together two generations of the Ohtake family’s design approach within a single bathroom range. Ruy Ohtake established its distinctive combination of organic geometry and thin ceramic construction, while Rodrigo Ohtake has extended that language through softer, more open forms.
For Roca, Fineceramic provides the material platform connecting these sculptural designs with functional over-countertop basin formats, while the different dimensions and finishes broaden the collection’s configuration options for contemporary bathroom interiors.
